States in this region will not evolve into Western-style societies, but will retain their own 'soft' authoritarian institutions and will, for that reason, remain more competitive in the global economy. Most states in the region have shared common experiences of rapid and successful economic growth, which have strengthened the view that there is something distinctive to the region as a whole.
