OECD Head Backs Korea-US FTA

South Korea should sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States, the head of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said yesterday.
In a breakfast meeting in Seoul, OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria called for South Korea to grab the chance to increase exports rather than fear an FTA with a large nation, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

On Sept. 9, South Korea and the U.S. completed a third round of free trade talks without making much headway. A fourth round will be held in South Korea next month.

The OECD chief also said there are a large number of FTAs springing up around the globe with obvious benefits.

Mexico's exports have jumped fivefold since it joined the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994, especially in manufacturing, which increased 10 times, Gurria noted.

In Seoul on a six-day trip here since Tuesday, Gurria is scheduled to attend a ceremony Friday celebrating the 10th anniversary of Korea’s entry into the OECD in December 1996.

He is to hold separate meetings with President Roh Moo-hyun and Finance and Economy Minister Kwon O-kyu, among other government officials.
